Tayto Park has officially opened its 60mph ‘Viking Voyage', an €8 million attraction ranking as Ireland's largest flume ride.

'The Viking Voyage at The Park', to give it its full title, is based around a 60-foot hill in the theme park and zoo, with the flume track stretching 700m in length.

1.7 million litres of water, 5,000 bundles of straw, over 10,000 tonnes of concrete and 500 tonnes of steel have been used in its creation, Tayto says.

As its title suggests, the attraction is Viking-themed. To create an authentic experience, the Ashbourne, Co. Meath park employed Viking experts from Sweden and theming contractors who have work in Disneyland and on Game of Thrones.

Replica Viking ships, ring forts and round towers abound in a ride purpose-built and storyboarded by industry ride specialist, Interlink.

For thrillseekers, the flume features three drops in total, with the largest drop a 12-metre plunge (and yes, you will get wet).

One of the chutes is a "surprise" backwards drop.

Tayto Park was Ireland's sixth most popular fee-paying attraction in 2016, according to Fáilte Ireland, with 762,000 visitors.
