Hike, bike or stroll -- explore great outdoors

Grainne Cunningham

GETTING away from it all, in your hiking boots, on your bike or even in a buggy, is the inspiration behind National Trails Day.

Experienced ramblers and couch potatoes alike are all encouraged to get off road and on to the country's wonderful variety of trails on Sunday, October 2.

The event invites young and old to explore lake walks, mountain climbs and park strolls and enjoy the great outdoors.

Choose from a fun treasure trail along the Garavogue River in Sligo, a Sea Eagle Adventure Walk in Waterville, Co Kerry, a guided mountain bike ride in Killarainey Woods in Connemara, or an edible trail around Cape Clear.

There will also be canoeing on the Liffey and a cycle along the Green Loop Trail, which is being opened for the day.

The trail connects a number of recreation parks in the greater Dublin area with the scenic Grand and Royal Canals, and is ideal for walking, cycling or running.

Go to www.nationaltrailsday.ie to find an event which best suits you.
