Hit the road this beautiful autumn and head for one of Irelands heartening food festivals.
Graze your way along appetising food trails, pick up hot tips from top chefs, and meet passionate, artisan food producers who will share the secrets of their success.
Here are some appetising food breaks to put into your autumn mix:
Enjoy Dingle delights
Tickle your tastebuds with succulent fresh artisan seafood at the Dingle Peninsula Food Festival along the Wild Atlantic Way (October 2nd – 4th). Have your fill grazing the delicious taste trail with over 60 restaurants, pubs and galleries dishing out heavenly dishes. Dip into the Tuna Cook-Off and check out some fringe art at the seascape exhibition from artist Carol Cronin in this famous Kerry fishing town.
At the other end of the country, sharpen up your cooking skills at a Taste of Monaghan, (October 2nd – 4th), where chefs Nevin Maguire and Adrian Martin will give top tips on choosing, preparing and cooking a range of meats.
Ireland’s Good Food Ambassador, celebrated UK chef and author Jenny Bristow, will also share her passion for cooking in a practical, hands-on masterclass. And there is lots more with competitions, exhibits, tastings, entertainment and fun for all the family.
Go Wild on food in Inishbofin
Immerse yourself on another Wild Atlantic Way gourmet adventure at Bia Bó Finne, (October 2nd – 4th), a food festival on stunning Inishbofin Island off the Galway coast. Be welcomed with open arms into this authentic Irish community and gorge on a sumptuous array of fresh organic foods. Not only can you help prepare the food, but there will also be an opportunity to go out and source it with appetizing food foraging adventures!
Chow down in Cork
Set sail for the Kinsale Gourmet Festival along the stunning Cork coast (October 9th-11th). At Ireland’s longest running food festival you’ll feel the heat at the All Ireland Chowder Cook Off and get a chance to dig in at Taste of West Cork Dining Experience with a five- course menu stuffed with succulent, locally sourced food. There will also be a return of the popular Foodie Walking Tour with the 11 members of Kinsale’s Good Food Circle taking part - and lots of music and entertainment around this gorgeous fishing town.
Taste Medieval Kilkenny
Put a tasty break in the heart of medieval Ireland on the mid-term menu and join the Savour Kilkenny Food Festival, (October 22nd – 26th). See celebrity chefs Nevin Maguire and Kilkenny’s own Edward Hayden, and be inspired by musician Niall Breslin, who will share his incredible story of his challenges with mental health at the Feed Your Mind & Eat Yourself Calm workshop. Browse the mouth-watering food village and meet award –winning local producers including the makers of Ireland’s only caviar, Goatsbridge Trout Farm, in front of Kilkenny Castle.
Dig deep in the Burren
Celebrate the harvest with delicious tastings, cookery demonstrations and expert workshops at the Burren Food Fayre, (October 24th – 25th), in Lisdoonvarna in the heart of Co. Clare. Browse over 15 different local food stalls, meet the growers and sample some of their wonderful produce. Top of the menu is an opportunity to take part in old-style Cattle Droving from Fanore to the Burren Winterage. This year also sees a return of the popular Burren Masterchef competition, where budding chefs are invited to create a dish comprising home-grown, wild or foraged ingredients from around the Burren Region.
Enjoy tasty Louth
Cook up a foodie break in the north-east and head for A Taste of Louth at Dundalk’s Marshes Shopping Centre, (November 15th – 16th). This intimate festival features the finest local produce along with live cookery demonstrations and entertainment. Delicious local producers taking part include Kookee Ireland who make awards-winning baked cookies and dry cookie mixes, De-Lish Donuts , and award winning butchers McArdle Meats. Coole Swan Liqueur will be showing off their festive wares including its Whiskey Chocolate and Cream Drink.
