A new visitor experience has been added to Kylemore Abbey and Gardens thanks to a €2.9m investment.

The attraction was officially opened yesterday and has seen a revamp of the abbey's interior. Visitors can now access a large new wing of refurbished rooms as well as a new multi-media presentation which will take people through the history of the historic site.

Speaking yesterday, Transport, Tourism and Sport Minister Shane Ross said: "Connemara, with its beautiful natural landscape, provides an inspiring backdrop to the development that has taken place at this already iconic and much-loved attraction - allowing visitors to experience a taste of life in early 20th century west of Ireland."

Conor Coyne, executive director of the Kylemore Trust, said: "The new visitor experience will bring the history of the estate to life and further enrich the experience of visitors to the Wild Atlantic Way.

"The Benedictine community will celebrate its centenary in Kylemore next year and this new development is a fitting milestone at the end of their first 100 years."
