Five Great American Rail Journeys

Peter Geoghegan

The Empire Service

One of the most scenic train journeys on the East Coast, this train goes from Penn Station, New York, all the way up the Hudson River. On the way you'll see myriad rivers, mini-fjords, waterfalls, forests and historic villages.

  • The California Zephyr

Take a trip through the heart of the US, from Chicago to San Francisco, aboard the world famous Zephyr. From the high plains of Colorado (pictured left) through to the beautiful Sierra Nevada, this is one train journey that has it all.

  • Southwest Chief

Alternatively, take the train from the Windy City to the great Pacific. Leaving Chicago, you'll follow part of the Santa Fe Trail first used by Native Americans, before crossing the imposing, and startlingly beautiful, Mojave Desert.

  • Sunset Limited

Escape the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles aboard the evocatively named Sunset, which travels across the desert to the fashionable resort of Palm Springs. Here you can relax by the pool, play a round of golf or explore the beautiful San Jacinto Mountains.

  • Coast Starlight

Operating between Seattle and Los Angeles, the Starlight passes some of America's highest mountains, as well as the forests and waterfalls of Twin Peaks country. At times the views of the Pacific Ocean are truly breathtaking.
