24 Hours in Liverpool: A perfect day in soccer-mad Merseyside
UK city breaks
What are the best things to do on a trip to Liverpool? Nicola Brady maps out 24 hours in the soccer-mad city.
10am: Wander the walker gallery
With more museums and galleries than any UK city outside London, Liverpool's art scene is thriving. Kick off the day at the Walker, where an excellent collection includes big hits and quirkier items - a portrait of Kim Cattrall, who was born in Liverpool, for example. Afterwards, wander down to Leaf on Bold Street for a truly brilliant sausage sandwich.

1pm: A tour of Anfield
Liverpool FC have been on a Champion's League roll this season, with their semi-final second leg set to kick-off this week (as we publish). Get a behind-the-scenes feel for the action with the Anfield stadium tour, which takes you to the top level of the Main Stand, into the dressing rooms, the press area and through the brand new Players' Tunnel, as well as the Manager's Dug Out and The Kop. Just don't make the mistake I did as a child and loudly ask who the statue of Bill Shankly is - my dad nearly had a conniption.

4pm: Beatle around Albert Dock
It's one of the most visited spots in the city, but a walk around the Albert Dock is a dream when the sun is shining. Amble the waterfront or pop into one of the excellent museums along the way - the International Slavery Museum is fascinating, and the Tate Liverpool is worth a visit too. National Trust-led tours of John Lennon and Paul McCartney's childhood homes also depart next to Albert Dock. A ticket to ride costs £24/€27.50.

8pm: Eat, drink, play
Fairly new to the scene, Wreckfish is a solid dinner option in a previously derelict building on Slater Street. Expect modern British classics, but be sure to leave room for a side of thick-cut truffle Parmesan chips. Sleep off any excesses at 2 Blackburne Terrace, a gorgeous B&B in a Georgian townhouse. There are only four rooms, each beautifully designed with dreamily deep bathtubs.
