Spring is officially here, and that can only mean one thing; it's time for the Irish Cancer Society's annual fundraising Daffodil Day.

It will take place next Friday, when a host of lovely golden daffodils will appear on our streets and in our towns, and bring a smile to the face of everyone who buys a bunch.

Among the many people around the country set to give of their time generously in support of the fundraising drive is Dell employee Laura Monaghan, pictured.

This year Dell has partnered with the Cancer Society for what is an ambitious fundraising event, and which has a target of €3.5m.

A lot of money, yes, but money badly needed in order to continue to provide and expand services offered by the society.

Indeed who can resist the lure of a bunch of daffs knowing you'll be helping out people going through one of life's toughest challenges.

Mark Mellett, head of fundraising at the society said at the launch of the 29th Daffodil Day; "Every family in Ireland is touched by cancer, it is startling to think of how prevalent cancer is and how many families are impacted by those three words - 'you have cancer.'"

La Festa della Donna

Join Gill Books for La Festa della Donna: International Women's Day Mimosa Dinner, a special girls' night out to celebrate International Women's Day on Tuesday March 8.

The idea behind this lively night of food and good conversation comes from Italy where every year on March 8, vivacious life-loving women book out restaurants to celebrate the day dedicated to their contribution to civilisation as we know it.

It was cookbook author Eileen Dunne Crescenzi's idea to do something similar here. While Paula Mee and Kate O'Brien, authors of the book, Your Middle Years: Live Them. Love Them. Own Them, will be on hand to offer invaluable advice for navigating the menopause.

They'll offer expert guidance on diet, beauty, sex, sleep, and emotional health, and leave you feeling empowered to manage the changes.

Taking place in Dunne and Crescenzi, Frederick Street, tickets (€45) include a three-course meal, wine and a copy of Your Middle Years.
