The way to avoid shocking medical bills
Thousands of people who end up in hospital are being billed for costly medical procedures despite having health insurance.
Here are some tips for avoiding a shock:
• Check with your health insurance provider before entering a hospital to see what exactly you are covered for. This obviously only applies with elective surgery.
• Be aware that some policies only cover a limited number of private hospitals.
• Find out if there is an excess on your plan.
• Be aware that
insurers are cutting back on what they will cover in an effort to restrict premium rises.
• There may be restricted illnesses on your plan, which means that a treatment for this may be only partially covered if carried out in a private hospital. Orthopedic and ophthalmic procedures are typically restricted illnesses on mid-level plans favoured by families. l People are sometimes given incorrect information by poorly informed insurance staff even if they do check whether they are fully covered.
