Smart Consumer: Should I have to pay for bracelet alteration?

Kathryn in Limerick bought a diamond bracelet with 50pc off the full price.

She says: "They took the full payment in the jewellers but kept the bracelet to take a link off.

"The day of collection they phoned to say there was an extra charge for taking the link off that they had forgotten about."

She asks: "Am I obliged to pay this money now?"

Well, if the shop forgot to tell you about this extra charge, that isn't your fault.

You should have been advised up front so that you could agree or disagree to it, and this fact doesn't change because the bracelet was a sale item.

You shouldn't have to pay it, and the shop should be gracious enough to realise their error and not penalise you now.
