Shopping Around: Vanilla ice cream
Everyone likes a bit of ice-cream and vanilla ice-cream is the staple, so this week we tasted four own-brand varieties. We scored on taste as well as ingredients, nutritional values and price.
Tesco Finest Madagascan Vanilla Ice Cream, 500ml
Price: €3.99 (€7.98/Lt)
Verdict: Yes this came out dearest, but in fact the 1Lt size of the same ice cream is priced at €4.29, which would make it second cheapest of the four. In any case, it was our favourite to taste, tasting less sugary than some of the others and with a good short ingredient list containing nothing you wouldn't find in the kitchen, it tastes more natural. It contains 34pc whipping cream and 100g has 215 calories (the lowest). Fat content per 100g was also lowest at 13.5g as was sugar content at 19.4g per 100g. This is produced in the UK.
M & S Cornish Clotted Cream Vanilla Ice Cream, 1Lt
Price: €5.39 (€5.39/Lt)
Verdict: There were no vanilla specks on this one, as there were on all the others, but it had a lovely smooth texture and tasted creamy. Made in the UK, it contains 10pc double cream and 6pc clotted cream. It has the second lowest calorie count of the four at 235 per 100g, and also the second lowest fat content (13.7g per 100g) and sugar content at 19.6g per 100g.
Lidl Noblissima Bourbon Vanilla Ice Cream, 1Lt
Price: €2.39 (€2.39/Lt)
Verdict: The cheapest price by far this one contains 39pc cream, the highest cream content of the four, and did taste lovely and creamy. The flavour just didn't seem as natural to us. The calorie count is second highest at 244 per 100g, fat content is also second highest at 16.1g per 100g and sugar content isn't indicated.
Aldi Killeigh Bourbon Vanilla Ice Cream, 500ml
Price: €2.99 (€5.98/Lt)
Verdict: This contains 32pc double cream and the cream is Irish. It was very creamy, which was a plus, but like the Lidl ice-cream just didn't have a natural taste that we prefer. The calorie count is highest at 273 per 100g, and fat and sugar contents are also highest at 17.9g and 24.1g per 100g respectively.
