Shopping Around: Tomato soup

It's a simple lunchtime staple, but will own brand tinned tomato soup taste as good as big brand Heinz?

None contain artificial flavours or colours and most contain no preservatives either. We scored on taste, ingredients and nutritional values, and also gave a nod to price.

Lidl Bulwark Cream of Tomato Soup 400g

Price: €0.49 (€1.23/kg)

Verdict: This was joint cheapest, along with Aldi's soup, but we thought it tasted much nicer. It contains 90% tomatoes so is rich and tomatoey, helped along by the presence of 1.2% double cream. Salt content is lowest at 0.51g per 100g. However, the calorie content is the highest at 66 calories per 100g, as is the sugar content at 5.5g per 100g.

Score: 7 / 10

Tesco Cream of Tomato Soup 400g

Price: €0.55 (€1.38/kg)

Verdict: Second-best on price, this soup also contains 90% tomatoes. It tastes creamy and not too sweet, although the double cream content is only 0.2%. Calories are second highest, sugar content is second lowest (4.7g per 100g) and the salt content is joint-second lowest at 0.6g per 100g.

Score: 6.5 / 10

Heinz Cream of Tomato Soup 400g

Price: €1.09 in Dunnes (€2.73/kg)

Verdict: This was a lot dearer than the others and contains less tomatoes than the two above at 84%. The calorie and salt content were both second lowest but the sugar content was second highest at 5g per 100. If you like the distinctive taste of Heinz baked beans you'll like this.

Score: 6 / 10

Aldi Soupreme Cream of Tomato Soup 400g

Price: €0.49 (€1.23/kg)

Verdict: Yes, this was joint cheapest and it has the lowest calorie count (57 per 100g) and the lowest sugar count (4.1g per 100g). But it is made from 91% 'reconstituted tomato puree' which just didn't sound right to us, and it tasted very sweet and a little 'thin'. The salt content is highest at 0.68g per 100g.

Score: 5 / 10
