Shopping Around: Probiotic yogurt drinks

Containing cultures that aid digestion, probiotic yogurt drinks are part of the growing number of food products with an added health injection. These are packed with sugar, though, and some list water or sugar as their main ingredients. So when we tasted five own-brand drinks, we scored on nutritional values and ingredients as well as taste and price.

Aldi 2Optifit Active Probiotic Yogurt Drinks 8 x 100g

€1.89 (€2.36 / Kg)

Verdict: The cheapest by a margin, this is one of only two that list yogurt as the main ingredient (Lidl is the other) and sugar is listed second. But it has the lowest sugar content listed (11.7g per 100g) and calorie content is also lowest at 71 calories per 100g. It had a thin consistency but we found it the least sweet to taste, which we thought was a good thing.

Score: 8.5 / 10

Lidl ProViact Yogurt Drinks, 4 x 125g

€1.19 (€2.38 / Kg)

Verdict: Just two cent more than the cheapest (Aldi) when compared on weight, this also listed yogurt as the main ingredient. Calorie content at 72 per 100g is second lowest and while sugar content isn't listed, the carb content is 11.1g per 100g so sugar will be a bit lower than that and may be lowest of the lot. It had a good yogurt taste and we liked it.

Score: 8 / 10

Tesco Everyday Health Yogurt Drinks, 6 x 100g

€2.14 (€3.57 / Kg)

Verdict: Perhaps as strawberry purée was listed second in the ingredient list this tasted yogurty and had a good consistency but sugar was listed as the main ingredient. Nonetheless, it didn't taste the sweetest and sugar content is third from the top (13.2g per 100g). Calorie content is also middling as is the price.

Score: 6.5 / 10

SuperValu Probiotic Low Fat Yogurt Drinks, 4 x 100g

€1.49 (€3.73 / Kg)

Verdict: Water is the main ingredient here, with sugar second and fruit third. It had a thin consistency but the flavour (strawberry) was lovely. Calories are highest, though, at 81 per 100g and sugar content second highest at 13.5g per 100g. On price, this one comes in second dearest.

Score: 6 / 10

Superquinn Probiotic Low Fat Yogurt Drinks, 4 x 100g

€1.65 (€4.13 / Kg)

Verdict: This was the dearest of the five and contains the second highest calorie count (77 per 100g) and highest sugar content (13.8g per 100g). Water is listed as the main ingredient, followed by sugar and fruit; this one has a thin consistency and was sweet to taste.

Score: 5.5 / 10
