Shopping Around: Lemon and ginger tea

For those who don't want to indulge in too much Easter chocolate, a refreshing lemon and ginger tea can be just the tonic . . .

When there's spring sunshine about, this can be a very refreshing drink and a light alternative to black tea if you need a pick-me-up. Plus this tea is naturally caffeine-free so is pretty healthy to boot.

We checked the ingredients and price difference (marginal when you compare on a per-bag basis), and also scored on taste. You'll be glad to hear that there is no need for a calorie or fat-content check when it comes to this drink.

M&S lemon, ginger & ginseng tea x20

Verdict These were our favourite on taste alone; lemony and a lovely rich flavour. They also contain the best ingredients and no flavouring at all, natural or otherwise. There is 28% lemon peel and 22% ginger as well as lemon balm, lemongrass, cassia bark, lemon oil and ginseng and that's it. The bags come in a foil bag for freshness.

Price: €1.49 (0.08 / bag)

Tesco lemon & ginger infusion x20

Verdict This tea is less about a very sweet lemon flavour and more about the ginger. It contains 38% ginger (the highest of those compared), 3% of lemon peel, 2% of lemongrass and apple pulp, rose hip and natural lemon and lime flavouring as well. Like the M&S bags these come foil wrapped inside the box.

Price: €1.35 (0.07c / bag)

Aldi diplomat lemon & ginger x40

Verdict Aldi's tea bags are the cheapest of the lot and to be honest we didn't find that much taste difference between them and the Tesco bags for example. Less lemon zest and more about the ginger, but not very strong, these contain 33% ginger and 25% dried lemon peel. Also listed in the ingredients are dried linden flowers, lemongrass and dried blackberry leaves. They do contain flavouring though, and not the 'natural flavourings' that the other bags list.

Price: €1.29 (0.03c / bag)

Twinings lemon & ginger tea x20

Verdict These were the dearest of those tested but also the most lemony to taste. They contain 37% ginger root, natural lemon flavourings and also lemongrass, blackberry leaves and sweet fennel. We found them the sweetest of the lot, which wasn't to our taste, but may be to yours.

Price: €1.95 at Superquinn (0.1c / bag)
