Shopping Around: Honey & mustard salad dressing

Salad days are here but will you make your own dressing or buy it ready-made? We tasted four, some were sweeter and others heavier on the mustard, so your own taste preference will count for a lot. We scored on taste, ingredients, nutritional values and gave a nod to price.

Ballymaloe Honey & Mustard Dressing, 250ml

€3.41 in Centra (€13.64 / Lt)

Verdict: This was the dearest by far, but there's no denying it's a good product, and the only one of the four made in Ireland. The ingredient list is great and it's the only dressing here not to list water as the main ingredient; in fact, it contains no water at all, plus it's the only one not to contain added sugar. It tastes lovely and sweet and has a homemade taste about it. At 692 calories per 100g the calorie count is the highest by a mile, but we're guessing that's because it contains three types of oil rather than added water. The sugar count is second lowest, though, at 4.6g per 100g.

Score: 8 / 10

M&S Honey Mustard Dressing, 315ml

€2.95 (€9.37 / Lt)

Verdict: This was the second-dearest but we really liked the taste. It was bright with a strong mustard kick. The ingredient list is very good and this contains the most honey at 21pc, although water is listed as the main ingredient, as with Tesco's and Aldi's dressings. The calorie count is lowest by far at 110 per 100g but all that honey plus added sugar brings the sugar content to 22.6g per 100g, the highest of the four.

Score: 7 / 10

Aldi Bramwells Honey Mustard Dressing, 250ml

€0.79 (€2.51 / Kg)

Verdict: There is no question that this wins hands down on price, and we really liked the sweet taste, too. The calorie count is middling at 226 per 100g and the sugar count is the lowest at 4.1g per 100g. This lost on points due to the longer ingredients' list.

Score: 6 / 10

Tesco Finest Mexican Honey & 3 Mustard Dressing, 255ml

€2.15 (€8.43 / Lt)

Verdict: This one had a lovely, strong mustard taste as well as being sweet. The ingredient list was good.

The calorie count is second lowest at 225 per 100g but the sugar content is the second highest at 15.8g per 100g.
