Shopping Around: Carrot and coriander soup

Well, the weather hasn't been pretty for May, so time to taste a warming yet fresh-tasting soup -- carrot and coriander. We tested four own-brand offerings and all are fresh from the chilled cabinet. The ingredient lists of all are good, containing nothing you wouldn't find in your kitchen. We scored on taste, ingredients, price and nutritional values.

Tesco Carrot & Coriander soup, 600g

Price: €2.45 (€4.08/Kg)

Verdict: This scored best on price when compared by weight and also contained the most carrot at 45pc. In fact, this ingredient list was the only one that didn't include water (except for in the stock). It was creamier than the others, contained carrot 'bits', had a strong carrot flavour and tasted good. The calorie count was sadly highest at 45 per 100g and the sugar content at 3.7g came in the middle.

Score: 7.5/10

Dunnes Carrot & Coriander Soup, 400g

Price: €1.99 (€4.98/Kg)

Verdict: This was joint second cheapest and contained the second biggest proportion of carrots at 43pc. It had the shortest ingredient list, which tends to be a good sign, and while we felt it could do with a stronger flavour, there was a lovely warmth to the spicy taste. Water was listed as the second ingredient. The calorie count was lowest by far at 28 per 100g, and the sugar content was also lowest at 3g per 100g.

Score: 7/10

SuperValu Carrot & Coriander Soup, 400g

Price: €1.99 (€4.98/Kg)

Verdict: Joint second cheapest along with the Dunnes soup, this one listed water as the main ingredient and contained 41pc carrot. It had a tasty spicy flavour though and nice carrot 'bits'. The calorie count was in the middle at 42 per 100g and the sugar content was highest at 4.9 per 100g.

Score: 6/10

Superquinn Carrot & Coriander Soup, 500g

Price: €2.59 (€5.18/Kg)

Verdict: The dearest of the four, this one also listed water as the main ingredient and had the lowest carrot content at 31pc. The taste was fine though. The calorie count was middling at 42 per 100g and the sugar content second lowest at 3.4g per 100g.

Score: 5.5/10
