Like pulling teeth. . .
Since when do we pass on getting something for nothing? Well, when it comes to free dental exams it seems that's exactly what we're doing.
Some 3.3 million people are eligible under the PRSI or medical card scheme to get a free dental exam each year. But fewer than 600,000 availed of the offer in 2011 according to new figures from the Irish Dental Association.
If the exam costs between €30 and €40 that means we are passing up between €78m and €104m worth of free dental benefits.
Given reductions in PRSI and medical-card benefits, perhaps it's the confusion surrounding what we can get that has lead to this. But although the medical-card scheme is now emergency-only and all other benefits under this PRSI scheme have been removed, you can still get the annual check-up. So if you are one of the eight in 10 who are entitled, make your appointment today.
