Apps and websites have helped Aileen Power make the most of her trips.

Before a recent road trip in the US, she used deal provider Living Social's Arizona site to check out local deals.

This meant she was able to surprise her boyfriend Jamie with a flying lesson – something he'd always wanted to try – that she snapped up for $60 (€44) instead of the $200 (€147) it would have cost at full price.

"It ended up being a highlight of the trip but it wouldn't even have occurred to me if it hadn't popped up on the site," she says.

The latest version of Google Maps also proved invaluable in identifying easily-accessible hiking routes they could get to in Arizona.

And, on a two-day trip to Paris, Aileen was able to plot where recommended cafes and vintage shops were located.

"In one case we looked at the map and realised we'd just walked past one of the restaurants on our list, but we would have missed it otherwise. It really helps you make the most out of a neighbourhood."

As Jamie travels a lot for work, Aileen says Tripit has been invaluable as it creates a detailed itinerary with alerts for flight check-ins, delays and hotel bookings, and shares the information with her so she knows where he is.
