New York has been crowned the best city in the world to live in if you are young but Irish cities Dublin, Cork and Galway do not even feature in the list’s top 50.

The Big Apple jumped two spots in the rankings, compiled in 2015’s Youthful Cities Index, as last year’s winner Toronto slipped into sixth position.

Just eight European cities placed in the top 50 list, with London and Berlin nabbing second and third place respectively.

The figures were compiled by Toronto based company Decode who surveyed more than 10,000 people internationally.

The results were based on safety, affordability, diversity, food and fashion.

“Half of the world’s population is under 30 years old and half now live in cities. Youth and cities – especially the largest ones – will together shape the future of the planet,” said Sonja Miokovic, co-founder of YouthfulCities.

“That’s why it is essential for cities to appeal to youth and actively find ways to unlock their potential.”

“We are at a time of unprecedented opportunity to transform the places we live, work and play by engaging the world's largest untapped resource – youth!"

American cities Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago each featured all featured in the top ten, as well as Paris and Amsterdam.

The research also found that the city with the largest percentage of people between the ages of 15 and 29 is Tanzania’s Dares Salaam.
