ONE major change this season means entry for the Lady Milne trials will be by way of teams of four or six. I am fully in favour of this move and it may well lead to a bigger and stronger entry. Too many of our leading players have been absent for too long and this may well have been the reason.
Bray is the big attraction on Sept 6 and 7 when 2,500E will be on offer for Swiss Pairs and teams. Entries to Brendan Martin at 087-2209152 or
Next,of course, on the agenda is Ballybunion Congress starting on the 22nd of this month.Entries to Nick Fitzgibbon at 066-7185471 or You can contact the Golf Hotel at 068-27111.
After that we have the Camrose trials and they run for three weekends, starting with the last weekend of this month and continuing in September and finishing in October,.Teams, of course, as usual.

Another hand from Seamus Dowling's excellent book, this time played by the late Des Deery. In these situations, players tend to moan about taking the H finesse the wrong way, but Des showed how it could be done without worrying who held the HQ. After the C lead, there were nine top tricks, but what about the 10th. Des ruffed dummy's clubs and then exited with a D. The defence was helpless and had to open the H suit or concede a ruff and discard.
