YOUNG drivers think they are better than others. More than seven in 10 (71pc) believe they are above average – yet they are more likely to be involved in a serious crash.

A survey by road safety charity the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) and Vision Critical found young male drivers are the most 'confident' – 75pc believe they are better than average.

Female drivers (68pc) are slightly less assured of their prowess.
