There has been a lot of chat about the new face-lifted Golf in the media over the last few weeks. However, Volkswagen Ireland has been strangely quiet about the new car, which would imply to us that it has a few of the old ones left to shift first. But when you look at what is on offer on the run-out models of the Golf, then it might be a case where the smart money buys now.

We know that we will get the 'new' Golf in April next year and that it isn't radically different to the current model. Given that many of the new features will be optional extras, it begs the question: is it a good idea to buy now or wait until the new one comes?

Well for us, when you take a look at the goodies on the Golf now, especially the Highline, we would say take a serious look.

At the moment, there is 1.9pc APR on a Highline Golf, with things like leather upholstery, adaptive cruise control, sat-nav, climate control, and for another €399 you get a pack which adds 18-inch alloy wheels, LED rear lights and Apple CarPlay.

That is a lot of car, and you can be pretty sure the new Highline won't come that well-appointed. There might just be life in the 'old' Golf yet. That would be where our money would go. Don't expect to see an actually 'new' Golf until 2018 at the earliest when the Mark 8 will be revealed.

Elsewhere in VW, the Polo is getting uber trendy with a special edition. Called Beats (after the headphones), this little boombox is sure to hit the right notes with the younger generation with a 300 watt sound system. It even comes with speakers in the A-pillars and a subwoofer in the boot. Prices from €20,120.
