Stirred, not shaken, by car chase
WE watched ‘Bullitt’ on the big screen to celebrate the Ford Mustang’s 50th anniversary.
This is the film with Steve McQueen at the wheel of the Mustang in the longest car chase in movie history.
Honestly, there were a couple of occasions when I reacted as if I were in the car as it bounced and leapt over the streets of San Francisco.
I applied 'the brakes' and felt myself swaying to the side.
What an experience. I had to remind myself I was in a cinema seat.
Graphic and gripping stuff.
Amazing how your eyes play tricks on you.
What a car it has been since 1964.
They had a beautiful version at the Dundrum Shopping Centre to coincide with the special showing – absolutely immaculate.
You may know I drove one in Cork recently. It only enhanced my admiration for the way it was driven in the film because, while it is a wonderful straight-line driver, taking corners at reasonable speed was not its forte.
The first 'European' Mustang is due here next year.
I look forward to it big time – but don't anticipate a repeat of the film-chase sensations.
