THIS is Skoda's new Rapid hatch-cum-estate Spaceback which debuts at Frankfurt in September and gets here mid-November.

Skoda expects its big seller to be the 1.6 TDI, 90bhp version (DSG auto optional). Petrols include a 1.2-litre 75bhp and two turbocharged 1.2 TSIs (86bhp,105bhp).

The Rapid slots between the Fabia supermini and Octavia family car in a competitive high-volume segment.

This has the same 2.6-metre wheelbase as the saloon but is 180mm shorter. Yet there's plenty of space for front and rear seat passengers – and 415 litres of a boot.

The saloon has sold well despite being heavily criticised by me and others for its cheap plasticky cabin and over-priced diesel (subsequently reduced). No details on pricing for this yet.
