RENAULT's new Scenic crossover, the XMOD, gets here this month and will cost from €26,090 ex-works.
It joins the newly face-lifted Scenic and Grand Scenic people carriers.
The new car merges elements of MPV and crossover SUV. It's more muscular, and the chunkier styling is designed to attract the increasing number of buyers looking for SUV-type motors.
The XMOD stays as a front-wheel-drive motor – nope it is not a four-wheel drive – but has 'Grip Xtend' which is similar to the excellent 'Grip Control' technology I told you about on the Peugeot 2008 a couple of weeks back. Effectively, it is a variation on the traction control system that helps keep grip over slippery surfaces. I thought it was great on the Peugeot and have every reason to suspect it is as good on the Renault.
Three settings on a dial, in the cabin, let you choose how to match technology with underfoot conditions – 'Expert' (takes control of the braking system); 'Road,' for regular driving; and 'Loose Ground'. The XMOD uses the system along with 16ins mud-and-snow tyres.
It also has more ground clearance, new alloys, special front and rear bumpers, sill guards and chrome-finish roof bars. Two stop/start diesels will power the new arrival. There is also a new Energy TCe 115 stop/start petrol. And there are two spec levels: Dynamique and BOSE.
Thankfully, the great attributes of the Scenic are kept on. These include handy ways of folding and removing seats, a good boot (up to 555 litres) and all those little storage spaces (71 litres) around the cabin.
I remember when the Scenic was first unveiled, in 1996, and more than 4.3 million have been made since.
The existing Scenic and Grand Scenic have also been re-styled with the marque's bigger logo more prominently positioned on the front of the duo as well as the XMOD. There's a five-year unlimited mileage warranty.
