Rapid aims to shake up market
THESE are the first official pictures of Skoda's production-ready Rapid -- the new compact family saloon which targets Ford Focus and VW Golf/Jetta buyers.
It gets here later this year and will be the first to fully show the marque's new design.
While they are saying they will reveal prices closer to the unveiling here, I think we can expect them to start around €15,500.
That is on the basis the Rapid is to slot in between the Fabia (starts at €12,895) and Octavia (from €17,995).
They are making quite a bit of fuss about the internal room in this thanks to its long wheelbase and torsion beam rear axle.
Despite the modest enough exterior dimensions (4.48 metres long and 1.7 metres wide), they claim the Rapid has plenty of room for five occupants and their luggage.
The Rapid will debut at the Paris motor show in September before going on sale here in the fourth quarter.
Expect a 1.2-litre petrol (75bhp), a 1.2-litre TSI (85bhp) and a 1.6-litre (105bhp) diesel.
The small-family segment is perhaps the most competitive of all and a new entrant of this stature is certain to shake up the market and inject serious new competition for the current kingpins.
That is especially the case where price is so sensitive.
