My side of the road

On the way to celebrate a great and special friend's benchmark birthday, there was a small flash flood in the hollow of a north county Dublin road.

I thought I was bunched because it was a surprise party and I was under instructions to be on time. I held my nerve and waited as some cars turned back and a few threw caution to the wind and ploughed through hell for leather.

Eventually I got sight of what was causing all the consternation. There was a big pool of water. I had no idea what all the fuss was about, though. I tickled through fair and easy, allowing two or three oncoming cars the time to turn and go back. I'm all for safety and not taking risks but this was ridiculous. It was a pool of water, no more.

It all goes back to our training as drivers. We don't get properly prepared for motorways, roundabouts, driving in the dark, driving in the rain, snow, ice – or moderately flooded roads.
