Motoring: Audi turns on style
Audi has brought some important changes to the refreshed version of their flagship A8 model, which has been a bestseller against the Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7 Series since 2011.
State-of-the-art LED matrix beam headlights dim automatically for oncoming traffic but cleverly shed light in the darkest areas of the road to help the driver pick out other objects in the distance with the aid of an on-board camera. Dimming for the driver has become a thing of the past, technology dictates best pitch and brightness of the lights for best safety, and it also benefits approaching traffic.
The Drive Select system also works automatically. As you drive, it adjusts such functions as the adaptive air suspension and will compensate for bad corners and poor road surfaces. Tricky roads have never been ironed out so smoothly.
The head-up display on the windscreen is also a major safety feature – no need to take your eyes off the road to get vital information and the seats are now improved for support and covered with top-quality leather.
The 3.0-litre TDi with 260bhp is now more powerful and will be the bestseller, with prices starting at €92,800. There is a more powerful 4.2-litre TDi version with a long-wheel-base version available. The engines have been tuned for lower emissions despite the increased power output. There is a high-performance SR petrol engine version available with a price tag in the region of €150,000.
Audi expect to sell 30 units this year.
