Mercedes says self-drive cars here this decade
MERCEDES will roll out 'an autonomous' (self-driving) car this decade.
This follows a recent trial with its Mercedes S-class 'Intelligent Drive' prototype.
Apparently, the modified Mercedes S500 hybrid took the same 103km route as Bertha Benz – the wife of Carl Benz – when she tried the first car 125 years ago – from Mannheim to Pforzheim.
There were passengers in the prototype but they did nothing as the car glided over the open roads and city streets. According to Mercedes, every one of the sensors on the car are based on what can be produced.
The brand's head of research and development, Thomas Weber, said the trial showed that self-driving cars could be on the roads today.
However, apart from production and technological hurdles, there are potentially major legal issues to be overcome. For example how do you legislate for an accident?
