Mercedes ring record changes as they beef up their revised E-Class

Eddie Cunningham Motoring Editor

Mercedes has made more changes and updates to its mid-size executive E-Class than to any other revised motor in its history.

There is new styling, updated engines, more standard equipment and new safety elements.

The revised motor will make its public debut at the Detroit Motor Show next month and is scheduled to be launched in right-hand drive in the spring.

Gone are the trademark quad headlamps, a feature that set it apart when it was introduced in 1995. They are replaced by a more conventional look and LED daytime running lights are standard.

You can choose from two grille styles – one sporty, the other more traditional. Also revised are the front bumper and bonnet.

Expect just the one petrol engine (2-litre turbo with either 181bhp or 208bhp). Later on, there will be an E63 AMG (V8 5.5-litre).

The central diesel will be the tried and trusted 4cyl, 2.1-litre. It will come with three power levels (134bhp in the E200 CDI, 168bhp in the E220 CDI and 201bhp in the E250 CDI) as well as a 3-litre V6 (248bhp in the E350).

Mercedes is claiming 60.1mpg for the E220 CDI (as a 7spd automatic, 125g/km). There will also be a E300 BlueTec diesel-electric hybrid.

New or revised safety elements include the radar-based collision warning system, Collision Prevention Assist. This can take over the brakes to reduce severity of an impact.

Another is Distronic Plus with Steering Assist. This helps to keep the car in the centre of a chosen lane.

Brake Assist Plus with Junction Assist can detect cross traffic and pedestrians. Again it can increase braking power to avoid an impact if the driver doesn't.

Mercedes says the saloon and estate models have no fewer than 11 new or tweaked assistance systems from the future S-Class. There will be a 6spd and 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission.

They have four suspension set-ups which broadly fall into the Comfort, Lowered for a sportier feel, Lowered combined with AMG sports package, and air suspension.
