Mary Hedderman, a strong and loving mother
I was privileged to attend with many of my colleagues the funeral last Thursday of Mary Hedderman, the mother of Sunday Independent Copy Editor Philip Hedderman, who is also Motoring Editor of the Herald.
Mary (nee Shaw), who had nine children, 26 grand-children and 26 great grand-children, was a strong, loving woman from Dublin's north inner city.
She showed great strength in coping with raising her large brood by herself when her beloved husband, Robert, died suddenly as they were visiting Australia in 1981.
Many of her children have served with distinction in the fire service, which was strongly represented at the funeral service in St Brendan's Church, Coolock.
Mary, whose remains arrived at the church led by a fire service piper, was carried out in her coffin by her four sons to sustained applause from the very large congregation. She was laid to a well-deserved rest at St Fintan's Cemetery, Sutton.
