Import figures show there is a huge demand for cars
USED car imports are steadily racking up the numbers. So far 46,583 have been brought in -- 10,000 more than this time last year.
It is safe to say they will top 50,000 before December 31. There is huge demand for the likes of the Ford Focus (2,764), Audi A4 (2,513), Volkswagen Passat (2,443) and Golf (2,000), according to Motorcheck.ie figures.
Which makes it all the more perplexing why the Government rejected efforts to increase new-car sales at home (remember swappage?) where it would get a lot more tax revenue.
The Department of Finance told Independent Motors it didn't believe there would be enough demand for new cars -- even though they would effectively be €4,000 less expensive when the proposed VRT rebate and dealer incentives were included.
