'I need a car to accommodate the Carony wheelchair'

Car-value expert Gillian Keogh teams up with Motoring Editor Eddie Cunningham to help you make the right choice with your next purchase. Gillian is Editor of a monthly guidebook on the values of used cars produced by the Motor Trade Publishers team. The team supplies a car-valuing service to the motor trade, insurance companies and finance houses.

I am thinking of getting a new car and have the passenger seat adapted to accommodate the Carony wheelchair (for my mother). We have the primary medical certificate. Are there hybrids which are suitable for Carony or which cars do you recommend? I have average mileage. Would not wish to have anything too big as I have to navigate a gate to get the car into the back yard. Currently driving a Toyota Corolla 1.4 which is perfect for my requirements.

Eddie & Gillian: In case some readers don’t know: the Carony Seat system allows a passenger to move in and out of a vehicle without needing to leave the seat. The seat itself moves from the wheelchair unit to the swivel base inside the car.

First off, this is a case where you really have to physically try out individual cars because some might suit your particular case and dimensions and some may not.

If the Corolla suits you so well, would an adapted one be one way to go? We think it just might. Anyway, stick with petrol because your mileage is average.

We would advise you strongly to get local help on this as you need to be absolutely sure of what you are getting. Sorry but we want you to be absolutely sure you, and your mum, are totally happy with things.
