Hardest part for me is giving people bad news about their car
What's your own background?
I started in the motor industry just over 10 years ago in Blanchardstown Renault as a service adviser. At that time I had no clue about anything do to with cars as previously I had been working in the travel industry.
It was just a case of learning as much as possible about the product from those around me and I have been with Renault ever since.
Linders is 75 years in operation this year and employs 40 between our branches in Finglas and Chapelizod. We have just taken the Renault and Dacia franchise for Dublin city north.
What is the hardest part of your job?
Giving people bad news about their car. My main role is to assist the customer when he or she is looking for advice on their vehicle. I also organise and schedule the work coming in and out of the workshop and keep customers informed of any additional work needed.
Do men and women ask different questions when buying a new car?
Not in my experience. These days both men and women are looking for value for money and reliability.
Do men and women differ in their attitude to having their car serviced?
It depends more so on the individual nowadays. It doesn't tend to differ between the sexes. But the majority of women don't pretend they know about the mechanics of a car.
What usually clinches a service or maintenance job?
With service it tends to be price and doing what you said you would do. People are trying to stretch out their services because money is tight so it's all about trying to offer value for money.
What's the most unusual reason for a customer visiting your service department?
I had a customer complaining about a smell in her car and nobody could figure out where it was coming from. We ended up finding a dirty nappy lodged under the rear seat.
If you could work in another industry what would it be?
I'd probably go back to the travel industry.
If you had a limitless budget what would be your dream car?
A white Bentley GT convertible.
