End of the road in sight for spare tyres

THE end of the spare wheel is nigh, according to a motoring expert.

Many cars now have just emergency 'space-saver' wheels or puncture repair kits instead of a full-size spare in the boot.

According to Peter Dynan, head of product Nissan Ireland, we are witnessing the end of the traditional spare tyre for more and more car owners. "Spare tyres are going to go. They are on the way out," he said.

It is all down to automakers trying to shave every ounce they can from their cars.

Lighter cars consume less fuel. Less fuel means fewer emissions and that results in lower VRT and road tax.

Mr Dynan said roadside assistance and recovery plans – as part of a car's warranty – would play a bigger part for motorists concerned about getting a flat or being stranded.

"That is going to become more important for drivers," he said.
