Christmas can come early, if you don't need 14 plates

GERALDINE HERBERT

At the end of the year as our thoughts switch to Christmas, mistletoe and mulled wine, trawling though car dealerships is unlikely to be high on your agenda, but if you are after a bargain then think again, this is the very best time to get a great deal on a new or nearly new car.

While many new car buyers relish the idea of a 141 registration plate, for those who are prepared to settle for a 131 or 132 car the savings can be significant.

As ever, it pays to shop around, but to save you some time we've picked some of the best deals from around the country this week.

Those in the market for a Skoda Citigo could save nearly €3,000 on a new 131 from Burns Car Sales in Ballisadare, Co Sligo. They have an ex-demo Citigo active five-door with metallic paint and 60bhp for sale at €9,800. The original list price is €12,500. If the Citigo is a little on the small side, a 1.6TDi Skoda Rapid Elegance, originally priced at €24,500, is available for €20,500.

For the compact family car buyer, Active Cars in Carlow is offering a 131 1.6 HDi Citroen C4 Connected Edition with a list price of €22,000 for €16,995 representing a saving of €5,000. Rialto Motors in Dublin have a five-door 1.6 TD Focus Edge for €21,450 down from an original price of €23,750.

Meanwhile, Airside Peugeot in Swords has a range of 131 Peugeots available with savings up to €6,480 on a Peugeot 5008, while Kia Liffey Valley in Dublin has an ex-demo model Kia Sportage for €26,495 – that is a saving of up to €2,600 off the list price of €28,595. This models comes well-equipped with 17-inch alloys, half leather interior, privacy glass, rear parking sensors, roof rails, Bluetooth, air con and much more.

For an executive car without the premium price tag, Joe Duffy Motors has a 2013 BMW 520d ED with leather seats, heated seats, parking sensors and Bluetooth for €7,005 less than at the beginning of the year.

The current price is €38,995, and that is inclusive of a five-year/100,000km service inclusive pack.

If you are looking for something a little different, consider the bold design and beautiful styling of the Citroen DS5. Citroen Dublin has a black 2013 DS5 D Style 2.0l HDI with 17,000km on the clock for €29,950. The same car to buy new €38,000. Opt for a 2012 Hybrid version and you could save yourself €14,000. A 2012 DS5 Hybrid diesel in pearlescent white now retails for €36,950 but to buy new would cost €51,000.

Finally, if you fancy the idea of hitting the open road this winter in a sports car, Kelly Toyota in Donegal has a grey 2013 Demo Toyota GT86 with 20,000km on the clock. Priced at €42,215 at the beginning of the year it is now only €31,495 – so a saving of more than €10,000.

Remember, whichever model you're looking at, make sure you haggle – all dealers and manufacturers are trying to meet monthly and annual sales targets, so there has never been a better time to buy a new or nearly new car.
