I automatically get a great buzz from driving – and EVs can offer a genuine thrill

People often ask me why I will jump at the chance to take someone to, or from, the airport – or Galway or Cork or Derry, no matter the day or hour.

It’s simply because I like driving, especially if I have a nice automatic transmission.

I’ve written before on how I’ve been converted from being an avid gear-shifter.

I’ve had a couple of the latter recently and, without being in anyway critical, I would go for the automatic versions any day.

People often have to stop and think when I tell them that the hybrid, or EV or plug-in they are driving are effectively automatics.

But the point I want to make here is not so much about the ease and facility of driving an auto, it is how you can still get great fun from the car.

Driving is all about being safe, of course, but beyond that lies, for me anyway, the awe and wonder I have for the achievements in engineering and technology that have got cars to where they are.

We do take an awful lot for granted. Which is why I am attempting to highlight the wonders that lie at our fingertips every day.

And that is why I love driving. Because every sortie ignites that sense of wonder and awe, no matter how short or long the journey.

I used to drive quicker; I used to drive a bit more and I used to take sports cars up and over mountain roads for the sheer pleasure of feeling the motion. I still do but at a slower rate because there are so many other vulnerable road users.

But the magic of movement remains. And even the shift to electric won’t change that because they get all their power right from the get-go. What’s not to like about that? Galway anyone?
