'What new automatic saloon would you recommend? My budget is €55,000'

I have a 2015 Volkswagen Golf 1.6 diesel with 110,000km on the clock. I am doing about 40,000km a year. I would like something a bit bigger, such as a saloon. I would not like an SUV because I don't see the need for one as it is only myself driving the car. My driving is mainly on motorways for work. I have a budget of €55,000 including trading in the car. I would prefer an automatic and was planning to buy new.
Gillian: Your budget makes me happy. I can list off all my favourites here. These include the Audi A6 2.0 TDi S-Line S-Tronic, BMW 520d M Sport auto, Jaguar XF 2.0 dsl Portfolio auto and Mercedes E220d AMG-line auto. All these fall under the €55k budget and are suited to motorway driving. Buying new is best for you with such large mileage, but bear in mind you will need to consider changing in three years to limit your depreciation hit. The current best one-year-old residual of the options listed is the BMW 520d.
I can't resist putting the following in, in case you haven't thought of them - Audi A5, BMW 4 Series and Mercedes CLA. They aren't saloons but lovely coupes that won't eat up all your budget.
Eddie: Has to be diesel at that mileage. In addition to what Gillian suggests (and the Mercedes E-Class auto would be my pick), also think about a Volkswagen Arteon (big, big car) specced to the gills and still leaving you a few euro in your budget. It's nicer with the new 2-litre petrol, but the diesel is tried and trusted.
