The top 10 things you should do to save life and limb this summer
An intense road-safety campaign is to be mounted here by the Royal Irish Automobile Club and Motorsport Ireland in an effort to complement existing drives to save lives.
The major push is being called the FIA #3500LIVES road safety campaign, and it is scheduled to go on for six months.
It is backed by a host of global personalities, including Rafael Nadal, Nico Rosberg, Fernando Alonso and Pope Francis, to mention just a few.
The six-month drive starts this Saturday as we head into a summer of busy roads, heavier traffic and more frequent journeys.
To 'drive home' the message, they are concentrating on 10 critical areas for people to follow. Most are obvious and repeated often enough by safety organisations here, but that doesn't make them any less worthy of being highlighted again. The top 10 are:
1. Obey the speed limit
2. Use a child safety seat
3. Check your tyres
4. Buckle up
5. Don't text and drive
6. Never drink and drive
7. Always pay attention
8. Stay bright
9. Wear a helmet
10. Stop when you are tired
