You can knock hundreds of euro off the price of your car by overlooking simple things.

According to Glass's Guide there are five key things to do/avoid.

Smoking: A 'lingering smell' of tobacco will drive most people away, the experts say. And knock 15pc off the price. It's a hard smell to eradicate; lots of odour removers needed.

Pet smells and hairs: The experts say pet smells are "almost as unpopular as tobacco". Pet hairs are difficult to remove from the seat fabric and carpet. Hard work again, I'm afraid.

Sticker and decals: The Manchester United sticker could earn you a friend but is more likely to affront a rival-team fan. Remove stickers without damaging paintwork or glass.

Fixing holes: Some people attach bits and pieces to the dash or around the car leaving little marks or holes. You need specialist repair kits.

Streaks, smears, untidiness: Give your cabin and boot a serious cleaning and washing. Or spend a few euro on a mini-valet. It could pay for itself many times over.
