Tesla's most affordable model, the Model 3 can now be ordered via their online portal. Prices start from €48,900 for the entry-level model and from €60,700 for the Performance.

A family-sized saloon, the model 3 will rival the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, Mercedes C Class and Jaguar XE in a highly competitive segment of the market.

It is expected that the first cars will be delivered next month with priority depending on who has ordered first and which model they have chosen.

According to Tesla, the Model 3 is designed and built as the world's first mass-market electric vehicle. While its a claim we doubt Nissan would agree with given the success of their Leaf, the launch is a critical step in Tesla's mission to accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy.

From launch there are 2 specifications; Model 3 AWD Performance and RWD in Standard Range Plus with a 530km and a 415km range respectively.

Charging is fast and all Model 3 customers will have pay-per-use access to their global Supercharger network, which is reserved specifically for Tesla owners. There are more than 430 Supercharger locations with more than 3600 Superchargers in Europe and more to come. Supercharging costs 28c/kW. There are 4 Tesla Superchargers in Ireland and two more planned for Enfield and Lisburn.

Is it safe? Tesla insist it is and all models come with a range of active safety features as standard, including Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Warning and Side Collision Warning.

Every Model 3 comes with Autopilot technology, which allows the car to steer, accelerate and brake automatically within its lane. Should you decide to splurge an extra €5,400 on the self-driving capability, you'll get a car that is able to navigate motorways, change lane and park itself.

The Model 3 comes in five colours. For maximum curtain twitching, opt for the Multi-Coat Red, it will, however, set you back an extra €1,100.

Need to tow stuff? Go ahead. Model 3 has a towing capacity of up to 910kg. The Tow Hitch cannot be installed after delivery so it must be specified when ordering and will cost an additional €1,100.
