
The finalists in the World Car Awards of the Year categories have been chosen – with a strong field of electric cars among contenders for the prestigious gongs.
There are six World Car Awards categories, ranging from urban car to performance.
The individual category winners, as well as the winner of the overall award, will be announced on April 5 at the New York International motor show.
The finalists have been whittled down from a large field of contenders.
A total of 100 international automotive jurors from 32 countries voted by secret ballot for what they considered the best new cars of 2023.
Ireland’s sole representative on the jury is the Irish Independent motoring editor.
So, after all that, here are the Top Threes in the world finalists:
World Car of the Year: BMW X1/iX1, Hyundai Ioniq 6 and KIA Niro.
World Electric Vehicle: BMW i7, Hyundai Ioniq 6 and Lucid Air.
World Luxury Car: BMW 7 Series/i7, Genesis G90 and Lucid Air.
World Performance Car: Kia EV6 GT, Nissan Z and Toyota GR Corolla.
World Urban Car: Citroen C3, ORA Funky Cat/Haomao and Volkswagen Taigo.
World Car Design: Hyundai Ioniq 6, Land Rover Range Rover and Lucid Air.
Commenting on the popularity of the awards this week, the show’s president Mark Schienberg said: “We salute this year’s finalists and are pleased to be part of the most important automotive awards program on the planet.”
Last month Hyundai’s SangYup Lee, was named World Car Person of the Year in Toronto.
