Range Rover's new Evoque to start at €42,845

Range Rover's new Evoque (pictured) - due here in May - will cost from €42,845 ex-works, I can reveal. That's for the 2.0D FWD manual version.

I understand the new SUV will come with quite a range of 4-cyl diesel and petrol engines. And it will have Land Rover's first mild-hybrid electric technology (MHEV).

First cars for test drive are scheduled to arrive in dealer showrooms in May.

Before that, however, an 'Evoque Preview Tour' kicks off next week here (from March 19th).

It will visit each Jaguar Land Rover retailer.

That should be an interesting taste of things to come.

l From vibes I'm picking up I reckon that Skoda's new SCALA hatch, which replaces the Rapid and is due here relatively soon, will start ever-so-slightly above the €20,000 mark.

Aimed at younger drivers, the new car will slot between the smaller Fabia supermini and the larger Octavia.

Expect official pricing and spec levels (Active, Ambition and Style trim lines remain) to be announced soon.

But while the Scala fits between the Fabia and Octavia in real terms, it looks like being closer on price to the Octavia (from €22,000).

That's because it has more technologies on board and the presence of the new MIB3 infotainment system.

* Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi are promising 'a new start' to their motoring alliance.

They are doing so in an attempt to put the arrest and sacking of former chief Carlos Ghosn behind them.

A new board has been created which incorporates current joint ventures etc.

Better times ahead? Not for Nissan's premium arm, Infiniti. It is pulling out of western Europe. It is no longer considered a viable business.
