Put family safety first when buying new 182-reg motor

With families gearing up to buy a new 182-reg motor, it's a timely juncture to remind people to prioritise safety.

It may seem trite and obvious to say so, but it is easy to overlook that element in favour of more tangible and visible creature comforts.

Safety and comfort are by no means mutually exclusive, but safety has to always come first.

Your car will have all sorts of airbags, of course. But it is also worth asking about, and checking to see if, the model you are buying has automatic emergency braking (AEB), for example.

This system can detect an imminent forward crash with another vehicle in time to avoid or mitigate impact.

If your reaction/response is not deemed sufficient to avoid impact, the system can automatically apply the brakes to reduce the severity of a crash.

There are widespread calls for AEB to be mandatory on all new cars. Yes, it costs extra and can mean buying a more expensive version of the model you have chosen. I am not saying stretch your budget unrealistically, but if you can afford it, it is money well spent.

It's a welcome inclusion on all cars, but especially with a family on board.
