Opel here is to ask owners of all fire-risk Zafiras to take the cars to dealers for a free check.

Opel say they are working with the authorities to write directly to Zafira owners whose non-climate-control cars are affected (2005-2014).

So far there have been reports that eight cars, out of 8,000, have had problems with their heating and ventilation systems. Only those with manual air con, or with none, are potentially involved; those with climate control are not, Opel say.

Owners will be asked to visit their dealership for a free inspection of the car’s heating and ventilation system. There will be no charge to customers if parts need to be changed.

They have issued an Opel Customer Assistance number: 01 533 9818.

The problem with Zafiras was highlighted recently when dramatic on-line footage was shown of a car in Cork bursting into flames.

And the Irish Independent revealed how a Donegal mother-of-five and her family had a lucky escape when their Opel Zafira burst into flames shortly after she and her four young passengers fled the smoke-filled car.
