JAGUAR began its battle for a whole new set of buyers with the rollout of its new XE saloon here today.
Prices start from €37,995 which means they have decided to really put it up to their key target – BMW’s 3-series. The automatic version starts at €40,410.
Those prices are for the 163bhp 2-litre diesel. The 180bhp version starts at €39,100 and goes on sale immediately - and will be followed by the 163bhp version in the near future.
The engines are the first of the new Ingenium diesel family which, at their most frugal, can manage 4 litres/100km (75mpg) and emit 99g/km.
The 2-litre petrol (a Ford engine) SE automatic starts at €50,575. And there is a powerhouse V6.
The new XE has a high percentage of aluminium and is the first model developed from the company’s new modular vehicle architecture. There are 6spd manual and 8spd automatic transmissions
Naturally, Jaguar claim their new arrival is better priced than the key rivals: BMW 3-series, Audi A4 and Mercedes C-Class.
It will be interesting to see how it fares against such stalwarts of the genre. Get set for a high-summer battle for buyers.
