Jack Powell: one of those special people
We are saddend to hear of the passing of a truly special man, Jack Powell, who had 41 Volkswagens in the course of his near-102 year life.
The retired Nenagh, Tipperary, vet spoke to me some time back after taking delivery of his 41st Volkswagen on his 100th birthday from Tom Harvey Motors, his local dealer.
Mr Powell bought his first Volkswagen in 1953 and drove out of the showroom in his 41st vehicle, a Polo, in May 2013.
He was born on May 29, 1913, the youngest of five children and lived through two world wars, the War of Independence and the Civil War.
Volkswagen Ireland's spokesman Paddy Comyn described Jack as "a true inspiration". He added: "He had a superb attitude to life and seemed to snigger wistfully at the notion that you should slow down in your elder years."
I remember being in awe of his vivacity and optimism in the course of, and after, my interview with him.
Sincere sympathies to his family and friends from all at Independent Motors.
