It's MINI Happy Returns as special edition marks 60 years of little icon
The MINI is 60 years old this year. Yes, the car and name that changed motoring for ever - and came to epitomise the Swinging Sixties - has clocked up the years, the miles and the memories.
And now it is a case of MINI Happy Returns.
It is not surprising to learn they are setting up a series of celebratory events to mark the special occasion.
I'm sure there will be MINI (old and new) events coming out our ears by the end of the year.
But they have kicked off the 2019 anniversary proceedings by making a limited-edition model.
There are a mere 500 examples of it being produced and those sold here will cost €40,370.
It is distinguished by a new Racing Green paint finish, a black contrast roof, special 17in alloys and a much-changed interior.
It's called the 'MINI 3dr Cooper S 60 Years Edition' and will come with automatic transmission only.
With combined emissions of 129/127 g/km) road tax comes to €270, while the car should feel fairly nippy given it has an 0-100kmh time of 6.7 seconds.
As well as the new paint finish and piano black exterior trim, black roof and exterior mirror caps, there are 'anniversary design' bonnet stripes and a special emblem on the left-hand bonnet stripe.
Every model will have an extra set of MINI spot lamps on the front radiator grille.
The 60 Years emblem adorns the interior too, including the steering wheel and front seats (leather lounge in Dark Cacao with contrast seat stitching to be precise).
There is a Navigation Plus pack with a larger 8.8in touch display, rear view camera, folding exterior mirrors and Park Distance Control (PDC - front and rear), LED lights back and front, intelligent emergency call, ambient lighting, auto headlights and wipers.
Such opulence was surely far from the mind of Mini creator Alec Issigonis when it was officially launched in 1959.
His idea was for a car that, among other things, would be fun to drive.
In fairness under his creation and since the MINI of much more recent vintage, the cars have been about having a bit of fun in the drive.
I've a feeling there will be plenty of fun celebrating that this year too.
