I have a Fiat Punto with 110,000km on the clock. It is a great little car, but I'm going to be travelling further to work from next month and need something bigger and newer. I'd be afraid it would start to give trouble. I'm 25 and I have a budget of €10,000 (half my own, half from my parents. What would you suggest I do? I don't want to face the winter without a newer car.
Gillian: I am going to stick with a hatch for you, but move from small to mid-size. Your €10k is a great budget and there is plenty to choose from. You don't want trouble so I am going to go as new as possible but with spec that will impress.
A 13-reg Kia cee'd (although I would go Pro-cee'd for the 3d/coupe shape) will take all of your budget and maybe a little more, but you might be able to push your parents a little more with the comfort of still having the guts of two years left of its seven-year warranty. The EX spec is the one to go for. The 1.6 diesel is the seller here and while the 1.4 petrol is becoming popular again, the spec was quite basic. Priced similarly, and with the same scenario for diesel spec options versus petrol, the Hyundai i30 is also a super buy and there should be plenty on the market. Search for a Deluxe.
Pushing the year up a bit, a 14-reg Seat Leon 1.2 SE would be a good buy. I am pushing the budget a little bit - sorry. To get you back under the €10k and into a newer year, a 14-reg Peugeot 308 1.2 Active would be a great choice, but it might be hard to find one.
Eddie: Really great choices, Gillian. My addition to your extensive menu would be a Toyota Auris petrol because of its reliability.
