I am looking for comfort and a big boot. What do you suggest?
Aidan Timmons and Motoring Editor Eddie Cunningham team up to help readers make the right choice with their next car. Aidan visits dealers all over the country to produce a monthly guidebook on the values of used cars. He is co-editor of Motor Trade Publishers, who supply a car-valuing service to the motor trade, insurance companies and finance houses. Eddie is author of former best-seller 'Clever Car Buying'
I've one child and a lot of need for boot space (sports gear etc) but an equal priority is that I travel a lot each month for work. I'm looking for comfort for long journeys, reliability and safety. I am expecting to pay around €34,000 using PCP but I'm at a loss on where to begin. Can you advise please?
We say this nearly every week but it's so important to reiterate that you need to be methodical with your understanding of finance products.
PCP might work great for you, as I am sure it does for thousands of other people, but you say that you travel a lot each month. How much is a lot?
PCP contracts typically run for three years and the GMFV (guaranteed minimum future value - not to be confused as your future deposit or trade-in value) is typically contingent on around 60,000km in total (depending on the brand).
If you are likely to exceed this, then you need to consider hire purchase or some other finance product.
Once you have that part sorted, buy a Skoda Superb or a Mazda6. Massive boots in both.
I sense a PCP won't suit you - the mileage is against you, I think. Ask your credit union or bank about a loan. Shop around to save money.
The Superb has, as Aidan says, a huge boot but most of the cars in your price range fare pretty well on that front.
Have you considered an estate? As well as the two Aidan mentions, try the Volkswagen Passat, Peugeot 508 and Opel Insignia for starters.
