Eddie Cunningham: 'Ford finally make an EcoSport model with a rear-mounted spare wheel'
Now you see it, now you don't. Ford have - thankfully - decided to make an EcoSport model with a rear-mounted spare wheel.
It has been a source of irritation to me and many others, and contributed to a less than overwhelming reception by potential buyers. Now you can order one without that giant lump on the back. Only you will have to put up with a 'tyre mobility kit'.
On the plus side the design of the rear swing-gate for your spare-wheel free model has been changed so you get partial opening to the boot space. It is important to remember you can still order the EcoSport with a full rear-mounted spare.
The no-extra-cost option of wheel or no wheel does a lot for the look of the car, as you can see.
The EcoSport is built in India and is part of Ford's attempt to get buyers who are seeking small and compact SUVs/crossovers.
They say they took the opportunity to revise the car as well. Prices now start from €22,995 ex-works.
They claim handling and ride have been improved after work to the suspension and power steering.
Engines include the 1.5-litre TDCi diesel(4.4 l/100km, 115 g/km), 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol (5.4 l/100km, 125g/km).
